Why A Sleep Apnea Machine Is Important
With all the advertising dollars being spent on sleep apnea remedies, there is one definitive therapy modality that works consistently time and time again, the sleep apnea machine. Obstructive sleep apnea has been getting more attention recently, primarily because physicians and clinicians are much better informed. Armed with this new information, treating sleep apnea with sleep apnea machines has been more effective and ultimately has delivered better life quality for the patients’ who must use one.
Despite the all the information out there about the treatments for sleep apnea and the use of sleep machines, many patients are still ill informed about how exactly this unit helps them to sleep better. Simply put, a sleep apnea machine is an air pressure generator that connects a tubing to a mask that is worn by the patient. The mask’s purpose is to maintain a seal around the nose and mouth in order to direct the air pressure directly to the airway. This allows the tongue to be pushed forward and the muscles in the throat are kept open. This relieves any airway obstruction that is caused during sleep. As the patient uses the machine more and more, they will ultimately rest much better and get much needed rest. This greatly improves in their overall quality of life and allows the patient to be more productive during the day.
There are many factors that come into play in order for the patient to be compliant with the therapy. One of the biggest complains from patients is face soreness. Many times, the mask puts pressure on the face of the patient and can develop into rashes over time, making it difficult to use the machine consistently. It may be wise to have the patient try on different masks to find one that is the right for them. Another issue that comes up quite frequently is dry nose and mouth. Many of the newer sleep apnea machines have built in humidifiers that provides added humidity to patient to aid with this issue. If the problem persist, the patient’s doctor should be consulted in order to find a better solution.
Although it may be very difficult for some patients to adapt to using a breathing machine for sleep apnea, it is important that research is made in order to gauge the benefits of this type of therapy. People with mild sleep apnea may do fine without using one, but people with moderate to severe sleep apnea may have to really put forth effort and try to use the machine on a nightly basis.
