Treating Hemorrhoids: Prescription and Non-Prescription Methods

Hemorrhoids are usually a very minor health concern, but for the people that have them, they can by painful, embarrassing and make day to day activities difficult. Imagine not being able to sit without being in constant pain. Imagine having to deal with embarrassing burning and itching. When it comes to minimizing symptoms there are many excellent options available on the market. Simple over the counter medications like Preparation H and Tuck’s Pads can often provide temporary hemorrhoid relief. Preparation H contains ingredients called protectants such as petroleum, mineral oil and shark liver oil to moisturize and coat the hemorrhoid to reduce irritation. Preparation also contains an ingredient called a vasoconstrictor to help reduce the swelling; this active ingredient is Phenylephrine HCI. Tuck’s Pads contain the natural astringent witch hazel that works wonders on burning and itching. These treatments are only meant to be used for short term relief, if your symptoms don’t get better after a week, then you may need to consider more advanced treatments.

There are a few prescription strength hemorrhoid medications that work the same as over the counter medications, but they contain more powerful pain relievers and vasoconstrictors. Some of the most prescribed hemorrhoid medications include Anusol and Proctocort. Anusol contains prescription strength hydrocortisone to help reduce swelling. These prescription strength medications usually come in cream and suppository form, some people prefer the suppository form because it allows for the slow steady release of medication throughout the day. Just like with non-prescription options, these hemorrhoid treatment solutions are only meant for short term usage.

Unfortunately if you’re symptoms don’t begin to show signs of improvement using these options then you may need to consider an office procedure or surgery. Fortunately there are many outpatient procedures that can be done very quickly with a minimum of pain.
