The Beauty, Durability And Functionality Of Wood Worktops

Kitchen wood worktops are a warm, attractive and cost effective option to the commonly found stone surfaces like marble or granite that are being used so much today. Wood is more resilient and much nicer looking than laminates (like Formica) and, with proper preventative maintenance, will give a lifetime of service. In fact, if well maintained, a worktop made from wood will actually get better with age.

Solid wood kitchen worktops come in a wide variety of colors and grain patterns and can suit just about any decor. Whether it’s a lighter wood, such as beech or maple, or a darker wood like oak or mahogany, these counter-tops will add distinction, warmth and personality to any kitchen. And wood is also a very practical choice as well.

Oiled wood is easier to keep clean than one might expect and is actually very hygienic. The fibers in cut wood release a natural antiseptic that can kill germs commonly found on many counter-tops. This reduces the need to use disinfectants containing harsh chemicals and lowers the risk of food poisoning. Strong chemicals (such as chlorine bleach) shouldn’t be used on wood surfaces anyway, as they will have the tendency to damage them.

Wood is an easy material to work with (much easier than granite or marble) and can be cut to just about any shape, making design and installation much less of a hassle. This is a real advantage to the do it yourself installer remodeling his or her own kitchen. It’s also much lighter in weight than stone, alleviating the need to add extra reinforcement to the cupboards below that will be supporting the counter-top.

Wood can be more vulnerable to scratches, gouges and burns than harder materials and care should be taken to protect them from being damaged. Use of cutting boards and hotplates will help. Properly oiling or lacquering a wood counter-top will make it more resilient and durable.

With monthly oiling, wood kitchen worktops will actually improve in appearance as time goes by. Properly maintained, it will last a lifetime. It will also give your kitchen a distinctive look that’s hard to beat.
