The 3 categories of Landscape Lights

The 3 basic categories landscape lights are direct, indirect and ambient.

Direct lighting is light that is produce and directed specifically at an area.  The intention with direct lighting is to bring attention to that one particular item, area or design in your landscape.  Spotlights are the most common type of direct lighting used in landscape lighting

Indirect lighting is illuminating an area fully, but without a specifically directed harsh light.  The purpose of indirect illumination is to produce light from a source, and have it spread out relatively evenly over a large area.  This provides good light to see, but does not showcase any specific one item like a spotlight.  Good examples are wall sconces, door lights, lamps, path lights and chandeliers.

Ambient lighting is light that adds to the overall atmosphere, but it is hard to discern where it comes from or its source is not intense.  Rope lighting under railings, candles, and fuel torches are good examples of ambient lighting.

Each of the basic categories has several variations within, and it would be good to refer to a landscape lighting guide to learn as much as you can about landscape lighting options.
