Why is it always tropical islands where people fantasize about being deserted and locked off from any and all civilization? It seems to me that if I’m going to be stranded somewhere I’d want to be somewhere with a little more food options than coconuts. Not that I dislike coconuts. I’m just thinking, in the long term, I’m pretty sure by day two or three I’m going to run out of unique ways to prepare them. If I want to be alone with only nature to sustain me I think I’d want to have the opportunity to set a snare and catch me a rabbit. I’ve never eaten rabbit and have absolutely no reason to assume it would taste better or allow more cooking options than a coconut but doesn’t it sound more impressive to say you live off of wild rabbits than wild coconuts? I guess, what it comes down to is variety. If you want to live alone, far from civilization, as easily as possible but with no variety then a tropical island is probably right up your alley.

If you do select a bag with interior compartments, consider looking for a duffel bag that has a waterproof section. This can make it easier to transport wet swimsuits or liquid toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner or lotion. There is nothing more frustrating than opening a bag and finding that your shampoo has leaked all over your clothing and ruined everything in your bag. A waterproof compartment can keep spills contained. If it has a removable compartment this can increase the convenience since it can be lifted out and wiped clean.

You may want to look for organizational features as well. This can be something like the removable compartment or other smaller pockets that let you keep your smaller items contained and within easy reach. Many bags now incorporate a cell phone pocket either on the outside of the bag or as part of the carry strap. Other features may include a place to store a digital music player, complete with headphone port that lets you listen to music while the player is safely stowed away.

For many expats and world travelers, the most enjoyable part of living life on the road or out of a travel backpack is the spontaneity and randomness of living life without a solid plan or destination. While it’s true that many travelers painstakingly plan every facet of their journey – buying books promising everything from Asia travel tips to how to save money while backpacking through Europe – the truth is that these folks often regret the rigidity and needless level of formality their planning forces onto their travels. For most, a trip is a chance to get away from everyday life and this almost always includes a desire to break routine and everyday behavior. With that in mind, why would anyone ever want to bring the stresses of a schedule or a strict plan with them on the road? I for one, if I ever return to international travel, would be sure to leave the itineraries and day planners at home and take my chances with my wits and whatever my travels throw at me.
