Outdoor shading becomes essential in climates are predominantly hot and sunny. Without shade, patio furniture can become searing hot an impossible to sit on comfortably. UV rays from the sun can cause sunburn in a matter of minutes. These kinds of conditions are far from the vision of a perfect backyard environment. Shades work to block the sun in strategic areas around the yard, particularly on patios, decks and over outdoor furniture.

At night, however, these shades become practically worthless. Conventional shades like roll-ups keep much-needed light out at a time when it is most needed. One type of shade is capable of providing both shade and light in one simple solution. Patio umbrellas are a flexible and appealing form of outdoor shade that can be equipped with lights for night time use. Because they are positioned high up, they make the perfect mount for a light.

These systems provide an unexpected and interesting way to light up areas of your backyard. They are most effective right underneath the umbrella shade. Two general types of patio umbrella lights exist, each of which work in a slightly different way. The first uses a small disc with many LED lights on the outside. These “disc” lights attach easily to the central umbrella pole and stay at a pre determined height. These lights produce a clear and bright beam of light that is good for seeing everything clearly. In other words, they produce a very functional type of light.

Another type of umbrella light is less for function and more for decoration. Umbrella string lights clip onto the underside of the umbrella. The light is less focused, emitting a surreal glow to the general area. They come in many colors and provide a great way to add some creative color to a backyard. Disc and string lights can be used together for a comprehensive light experience.

String light sets come with several strings of lights, each of which connect to the umbrella support bars. All of the strings plug into a power port which plugs into the wall. Some umbrellas even have these lights installed when you buy them.

For a more natural solution, candle umbrella lights are available. They consist of a light module which sits around the pole on the table. A series of candle holders each hold a tea light. Special clear tubing call wind breakers protect the candle’s flame from the wind. Disc and candle lights cannot be used on cantilever patio umbrellas because they lack a circular pole.
