Elche is an absolutely magnificent city which has a deep history and has as many beautiful buildings. It is only a short drive from Alicante airport. One of the things that you will surely do to fully explore the city’s sophistication and love for art is by taking a tour in the monuments and buildings in Elche. These interesting structures will provide you some ideas about the city’s unique characteristics.

La Alcudia

The Neolithic dwelled on this remarkable site until the late Visigothic period. This is the sole reason why there were several extraordinary objects and wealth discovered in the area. However, La Alcudia only became famous when the sculpture of Dama de Elche, an Iberian art masterpiece was carved in the 5th century BC.

Basílica de Santa Maria

Another famous structure in Elche is The Basilica de Santa María, which contains eight stained glass windows that portray the scenes in Mystery Play, a sacred medieval play, held very month of August. These stained glass windows are the salient features of the Basilica. There are plenty of architectures which contributed to the church main façade and eye-catching interiors. You can actually see a great deal of Baroque, Gothic, and Neo classical architectural styles if you take a look at its interior decorations.

Palacio de Altamira

This magnificent fortress was constructed in three different stages. The first stage is the Almohad part, which is dated back in the late 11th and 12th century. In this part, you will see the main body of the large tower and a few pedestals. In the 15th and 16th century the second part was built and this is the biggest part of the building. It is a spacious and solid building with walls made of stone fragments and interlocking stonework. The last part of the building was built in the 18th century and was made out of the former medieval entrance. It contains polygonal ground with well-defined angles, made even more distinct by its circular corners. The third and last part is the large 18th century south façade built over the former medieval entrance. At present, it is home to the Archaelogical Museum of Elche.

These are the monuments and buildings in Elche, which are known to be the city’s sites of interest. Your family will indeed marvel at these structures as they were built not only to pay tribute to Elche’s history but also to showcase the town’s aestheticism and artistry.
