By the time I am done with this post, if you are a Seattle traffic lawyer you are either going to love me or hate me. In the end, I really don’t care how you feel, because this article promotes the way I do business – full disclosure to potential clients, so I’m just going to go ahead with it. As the title of the article implies, I’m going to talk a little bit about deferrals today.
To begin, a deferral is an easy way to get rid of a traffic infraction, whether a speeding ticket, running a stop sign ticket, or improper lane change ticket without the need of a Seattle traffic attorney. That’s right, if you are going to do this, you do not need a speeding ticket lawyer to help you. You can do it all alone.
A deferral allows you to get a ticket dismissed if you go one year from the date of your hearing without any additional traffic infractions. You pay a fee (usually between $100 and $150) and you don’t have to pay the price of the ticket. If you stay out of trouble for a year – poof, it is dismissed.
The downside to a deferral is that you only get to use on every 7 years, so you want to make sure it counts. And if you get a ticket during the deferral period, you are toast. Unless you beat the ticket outright, the deferral is going to be revoked and you are going to owe on both tickets (even if you get it reduced to something else).
If you want to do the deferral, the process is simple. Just check the third box to contest your ticket, go to your contested hearing, and ask the judge for a deferral. If you are eligible and the infraction allows it (some don’t – speeding in school zone, for example) the judge gives you the deferral and you are all done.
