Planting a Mixed Border

Adding flowers to a fence can make a traditional design

A mixed border can be one of the most delightful of all gardens. Unlike many other landscape plantings, a traditional border serves one purpose only, to provide as much pleasure as possible. From the first neat mounds of foliage in the spring to the fullness of summer bloom and autumn color, the mix of flowers, foliage, textures, tones, and hues is sure to deliver the design you want.

A border garden is great for a beginning or busy gardener, using durable plants that are easy to establish and care for. Behind the planting, and screening out distractions, is a simple fence. The border is meant to be viewed from the front, so taller plants go at the back. Against the fence you can train a clematis. It will add a bit of dark green color to the backdrop. There are many varieties available with a large color selection.

Summer is the most colorful season, with masses of flowers in shades of purple, blue, yellow, and white set against foliage in a range of greens, with accents of silver. Plant your favorite bulbs among the perennials to add spring color to clumps of fresh foliage that dots the bed early in the growing season. Don’t forget to drop some of your extra bulbs by your bench picnic table to add a little outdoor color. In fall, fresh purple asters and white boltonia complements the still-blooming bluesalvia and yellow coreopsis. The distinctive flat heads of rust-colored sedum flowers provide the perfect autumn accent.

The maintenance on this garden will be removing spent flowers and seasonal pruning(cutting stems to the ground). Be sure to put a label where your lilies are so that you will not disturb them in your fall clean up. You can put a few stepping stones in your bed so that you can access the back of the garden without damaging any of the plants. If you have a larger garden, you will need to either plant more of each kind of plant or just repeat parts of the design to take up the additional space. Tips byyard and garden rescue.com.
