Is an A3 Printer Expensive?
“Is an A3 Printer Expensive?” If this question was asked 5 years ago, the answer is definitely yes. These printers used to be sold at prices higher than $1000, which is exactly the reason why most homes did not own this kind of printer. Fortunately today, prices have gone low enough that almost anyone can get one of these printers, at a reasonable price of course.
To be specific, an A3 printer is a printer that is capable of printing in A3 sizes. According to the ISO standard, A3 sizes are 11.7” x 16.5” in dimension. If you are not sure how big that is, take two letter-sized papers and place them side by side. That is approximately the size of an A3 paper.
Let us go through the reasons why A3 printers today are not as expensive as they were.
Law of Supply and Demand
The law of supply states that the supply increases as the price increases and the supply decreases as the price decreases. Simply put, manufacturers are willing to produce more merchandise that are more expensive since selling them will mean greater revenue, thus greater profits. The law of demand states that the demand increases as the price decreases and the demand decreases as the price increases. This means that consumers are willing to buy cheaper products compared expensive ones. Both laws are exactly the inverse of the other. Since A3 printers used to be expensive, not everyone bought them. Therefore, what happened is that manufacturers were left with a lot of printers in stock. In order to get rid of them, a lot were sold at discounted prices.
Competition
Have you noticed that there are a lot more printer companies now? Instead of complaining that you have problems choosing the right model, you should be thanking them for their existence. It is because of the existence of different manufacturers that prices are going down to an affordable level. If there had only been one printer company, then it will have had the power to monopolize the entire market and dictate the prices of printers. What usually happens is that new players offer the same products at a much lower price in order to compete with the existing players. When consumers find that they are products have the same to offer in terms of quality and performance, the top players lose some of their market, forcing them to lower their prices as well. Aside from lowering their prices, it also drives existing players to do more innovation. This form of competition is healthy for both consumers and producers.
Lower Cost per unit
Aside from lowering the prices of printers because of competition, what also contributed to the decreasing prices of printers is the decreasing of their manufacturing costs. Due to automation, the prices of materials are cheaper than they used to be. This is the same for printers. The production of their raw materials, such as ink or chassis, is cheaper due to the automation industry. This is made possible by using robotic arms, which increase the speed of production, thereby reducing the cost per unit of printers.
In conclusion, A3 printers are not cheap nor are they expensive. Their prices, however, are reasonable for their purposes.
