Gang Fights at School
Gang violence is a serious problem in many communities, with not just gang members suffering serious injuries and even fatalities but also innocent bystanders. How much more serious, then, is the problem of gang fights at school? And yet in many inner city public schools, this is a reality.
Why do kids join gangs? Obviously some are interested in power, especially in having power over others. Still other kids join up because they are looking for a sense of belonging, especially in what is often a cold and dangerous world. And others may join because they are simply afraid and give in to the pressure. These last ones are perhaps the most unfortunate, as they could otherwise have hope for a normal life. Unfortunately, once they are in, it’s hard to get out and yet more people are likely to join.
Kids need guidance, and they need a proper outlet for their many biological and creative energies. Oftentimes kids in poor areas see darkness and hopelessness all around them, with no visible means of escaping such a dreary life. Being in a gang offers excitement, it offers a group to belong to, and it also often holds the promise of freedom through being able to earn a living. The overwhelming majority of cases though is one where money is made through drugs sales or other illegal means, and there is never really any hope. In fact, the opposite usually happens.
Gang fights at school indicate a deep failure of society in the both inability of our institutions to guide and provide a path for these kids who join gangs and it shows the failure of a family system where parents, who are supposed to “raise their kids right”, often have little contact with their kids and find themselves unable to control them, much less raise them to create a good life for themselves.
