Chemicals And Salts Used In Concrete Stain

Stained concrete flooring is ideal for modern, industrial lofts, or large areas requiring uniform color or texture for a dramatic look. Pool deck, drives or patios are ideal candidates for concrete floors too.

The actual process consists of the metallic salts being dissolved in the light acid solution reacting with the alkaline calcium hydroxide in the cement part of the concrete. This reaction makes it easier for the metals to bind with the cement to create newly-colored compounds. A baking soda (alkaline) wash is then swept over the concrete to arrest the reaction when the effect has been achieved.

This method means that once the dye has been applied, its there forever. The concentration and timing of the reagent need to be accurately measured as well, so that the desired effect is the same from room to room and slab to slab.

Nine times out of ten you or your contractors will use metallic salts dissolved in a light acid solution for concrete staining. This solution can be mixed and altered to create the desired effect. The colored concrete may also be finished using a finish or template to further the effect. In this way, concrete is a very flexible material for flooring.

These often may create earthy tones or rusty, metallic gloss, to faux marble, woods or even leather.
