Building A Rock Fire Pit

Having your own fire pit is a wonderful experience, but instead of buying some pre-built unit, consider building one yourself. It’s not that hard and can be done on a weekend. This guide will discuss how to make one out of rock. Any large rocks will do, which means this is a great time to get creative. Designer rocks can be found at your local home improvement store, but you can use any rocks you have lying around.

First you will need to find a space in your backyard that will be big enough to accommodate the fire pit. Keep in mind that the pit will need several feet of clearance on all sides as to not catch anything on fire. Clear all dried plants and debris from the site so they do not become a fire hazard. Now you are ready to start laying rock. Place the largest rocks on the first layer in a defined circle. Try to make it a circular as possible to enhance the structural integrity. You have two options for the next step. You can either seal the rocks together with cement, or simply stack the rocks loose. If you have children or animals, I would suggest sealing the rocks with cement to prevent a topple. Colored cement can be purchased that matches your rocks. Either way, keep stacking the rocks largest to smallest. You want the walls to reach about 12 inches high to contain the fire.

When you reach the top, I would suggest stacking slate or flat rocks around the border for you to place drinks on or to rest your feet. If you used cement in the construction, wait a day before using the pit. To get a fire going, place a few logs of wood into the center of the pit. Use a fire starter or some newspaper to start the fire. Now you’re ready to enjoy a nice hot fire on a cold winter night. Cook up some roasted hot dogs or smores for extra fun. Take pride in the fact that you built your own fire pit.
