Better Nutrition for the New Year When Eating Out

Are you like so many of us, struggling to make better nutrition choices, yet stuck eating out several times a week? You know the drill. You get up late, don’t have time to pack your lunch and are forced to make a drive to the nearest fast food joint for a quick lunch in the middle of your work day. Alternatively, you have worked hard all day, and just can not stomach the thought of one more stop on your way home from an already too long work day on top of cooking once you finally make it through the door. We have all been there, and will more than likely be there again at some point in the coming weeks or months. Life is busy, usually way too busy.

What could you be doing to make your nutrition better than last year without feeling guilty for eating out? My answer is to look for healthier fast food alternatives to the normal high-fat, deep fried drive thru menu items. The average quarter pound fast food hamburger packs a whopping 700 calories and 39 grams of fat, and that is if you skip the cheese and mayo. Add the cheese and your meal is fast approaching the 1,000 calorie and 50 grams of fat range.

In contrast, the average weight loss diet is around 1200 to 1600 calories a day, with fat at held to under 30% of the total caloric intake. Add the fries to your meal, and you are bound to end up gaining weight. Make the same poor choice several times a week and you will be spending a lot of time in the gym every week trying to ward off the excess pounds or suffer the consequences come years end.

Are there better, healthier choices for fast food without breaking your budget in the process? You bet! Both Subway sandwiches and Taco Bell are great choices. Taco Bell has a new Fresco menu featuring lower fat and calorie options on their new drive thru diet. With choices under 8 grams of fat and 200 calories each you can save a lot of fat and calories, for a very small price on the pocketbook. Find out how you can get a free Fresco taco coupon while supplies last and try a Fresco taco for free. Now free is a great price! Incidentally, printable fast food coupons are great money savers when eating out on a regular basis. Read more about how you can find tons of printable fast food coupons online. Fast food coupons are plentiful, and are easy to find in just minutes. Not all of the offers are for junk, salads, lower cal and fat options are availible just as often as the less nutritional choices.

Another alternative for those on reduced calorie and fat diets is Subway sandwiches. Subway is well known as a healthy fast food alternative when compared to most other fast food chains. Their fresh fit menu features sandwich choices under 300 calories and 5 grams of fat for a six inch sub. In addition to their diet friendly sandwich choices, there are a number of salads and low fat potato chip options from which to choose.  Subway is my top pick because they also actively coupon their menu items on a regular basis helping to keep your costs down if you eat out on a regularly.

It is possible to give both your waistline and your budget a break when eating out? Sure it is, and managing both is easy to do. All you need to do is know where the lower fat and calorie options are at your favorite fast food chains, then look for a coupon to save some cash.
